About the Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT

As a contemporary artist, my work navigates the intersection of personal experience and the natural world. While deeply rooted in tradition, particularly in oil painting, my art is not a manifesto but an intimate exploration of life's emotional landscape. Through metaphor and symbolism, I delve into themes like heartache, vulnerability, delight, and loss—transforming them into something more approachable and tender. My work offers a softening of the human experience, creating a space for reflection and connection.

My practice centers on oil painting, where I am drawn to its rich heritage and the tactile possibilities of layering pigments to create depth and intrigue. The process allows me to build emotional texture, where the richness of color and the physicality of the medium bring curiosity and warmth to the work. Each piece becomes a meditation on the balance between resilience and fragility, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of life in a more intimate, gentle way.

Through narrative and metaphor, I explore the delicate interplay between beauty and imperfection, using nature and the feminine as my guiding themes. My work invites a quiet, introspective journey—one that softens, harmonizes, and offers a tender unraveling of life's intricacies.

BIO

Charlotte Marie Isbell is an Australian-born artist from Sydney, now based in Madison, Alabama. Working predominantly with oils, her art reflects the complexities of life as a woman, blending personal experiences with an appreciation for nature. Quietly advocating for conservation through her work, she paints with a focus on metaphor, movement, and emotional depth.

Though she began with an impressionistic approach, Charlotte has evolved into an artist who pushes the boundaries of color and form, exploring the intersection of self, mind, and place. Her pieces tap into universal emotions—balancing bold expression with an approachable softness. Through her work, she seeks to harmonize beauty and vulnerability, using nature as a central theme.

A largely self-taught painter, Charlotte draws inspiration from a variety of influences: her background in classical and contemporary piano, over a decade in the Australian design industry, studies in France, and mentorships with abstract artists such as Nicholas Wilton and Noula Diamantopoulos.

Since her debut show in 2017, Charlotte has gained recognition through solo exhibitions and gallery representation in both Colorado and Alabama. Locally, she has built strong collaborations with collectors and businesses, including sponsorships and private shows that showcase her work in Huntsville's premium spaces. Internationally, her art is represented by Anthropologie, and her pieces can be found in private and corporate collections across Australia and the United States.

“The very first piece we saw of Charlotte’s could easily have been a painting of me, and I had to have it! A few months later, we commissioned a custom piece from her—it perfectly captures my sense of self, love, and life. We are in awe of her talent and the emotions she invokes in every piece she creates.”
