The Irises
The Irises is a series of intimate portraits exploring inward reflection and the delicate, often ambiguous ways emotion settles across the human face.
Drawn to expressions that seem to exist quietly between one feeling and another, Charlotte Marie Isbell surrounds each woman in fabric, colour and gesture, allowing the body to recede and the face to hold the moment. The softness of the scarves becomes a quiet commonality between the women, something both universal and deeply individual, strong and fragile at once.
Despite their differences, the women share an interior depth. The works are drawn toward a universal human frequency while acknowledging the particularity of each woman’s experience: an interior world that can be witnessed, wondered about and perhaps recognised, but never fully occupied.
Irises appear throughout the paintings — sometimes recognisable, sometimes dissolving almost entirely into paint — a recurring thread across five women, each inhabiting her own interior world.
