The Irises
The Irises is a series of intimate portraits exploring inward reflection and the delicate, often ambiguous ways emotion settles across the human face.
Drawn to expressions that seemed to exist quietly between one feeling and another, Charlotte Marie Isbell surrounds each woman in fabric, colour and gesture, allowing the body to recede and the face to hold the moment.
Irises appear throughout the paintings — sometimes recognisable, sometimes dissolving almost entirely into paint — a recurring thread across five women, each inhabiting her own interior world.
